Botamochi
(Peony Rice Cake)
Confection for the week of the spring equinox
A must-try nostalgic flavor
during the spring equinox when families get together

Along with the ohagi, which is enjoyed during the autumnal equinox, the botamochi of the spring equinox has become quite popular. This simple and nostalgic confection is made by steaming non-glutinous rice and glutinous rice, then pounding the mixture with sweet red bean paste, roasted soybean flour, sesame seeds, and other ingredients. Many people in their youth will have eaten the botamochi handmade by their mothers and grandmothers.
Azuki beans are nutritious and are said to prevent illness; this is another reason why these confections are considered suitable for family gatherings celebrating the beginning of spring and autumn. In Taneya’s botamochi – made using glutinous rice and a rice mixed with ten varieties of grains and millet – a glossy bean paste and a fragrant soybean flour are used to give the confection a “homemade flavor”.

Gosen
(Five Colored Raindrops)
Confection for the Hanamatsuri (Flower Festival)
Five different elegant colors
to celebrate the birth of Buddha

April 8th is the day of the Flower Festival, or the birth of Buddha. It is said that, on the day of his birth, the Celestial Dragon caused a sweet rain of five different colors to fall from the sky. In all the temples of Japan, ceremonies are held such as a procession of children pulling a large white elephant or pouring amacha (sweet tea) on the statue symbolizing the newborn Buddha, as was once done by the Celestial Dragon. The gosen of Taneya, named after the sweet five-colored rain, are made by wrapping bean paste, puréed sweet red bean paste, sesame paste, white azuki bean paste and miso paste into a gyuhi (a softer variety of rice cake) kneaded with sweet tea. A five-colored fish powder is also used in their preparation which is elegant and subtle.
